Urtidsdjur "Himlakroppars stämsång"
Sounds from Sweden
21/03/2025 | Urtidsdjur’s “Himlakroppars stämsång” is a masterclass in blending the raw, heavy tones of stoner rock with the ethereal qualities of Swedish prog. Clocking in at 6’21”, this track is a hypnotic journey that feels like an interstellar voyage through soundscapes both ancient and futuristic.
The song opens with fuzz-drenched guitars that set a weighty, doom-laden foundation, while deep atmospheric layers gradually unfold to reveal its cosmic ambitions. As the rhythm locks into a mesmerizing groove, droning vocal harmonies add an otherworldly dimension, further enhanced by guest performances on the nyckelharpa—a keyed fiddle that ties the piece to Sweden’s folk traditions.
By the time it crescendos into a psychedelic explosion, listeners are left awash in a kaleidoscope of sonic textures, evoking the spirit of Black Sabbath while firmly planting itself in Urtidsdjur’s unique identity.
Formed in 2017 in Uppsala, Urtidsdjur brings together four musicians from different corners of Sweden who connected through online ads and share a passion for progressive and psychedelic rock. Comprised of Emil Niklasson (guitar/vocals), Gustaf Boström (guitar), Kettil Engberg (drums), and Affe Kihlberg (bass), the band has carved out a niche where 70s Swedish prog meets garage rock grit, with touches of folk and psychedelia woven throughout.
The accompanying music video for “Himlakroppars stämsång” perfectly complements the track’s retro-futuristic vibe with its lo-fi aesthetic, adding a visual layer to the auditory experience.
